WA speed cameras 'not cutting toll'

poliscan speed camera1The West Australian government's doubling of the number of speed cameras has had no impact on the state's mounting road toll, former police minister Michelle Roberts said after another fatal crash.

A 52-year-old man died when his car burst into flames after colliding with a truck on the Brand Highway near Geraldton on Tuesday night.

The accident took the number of road deaths in 2012 to 105, up from 95 at the same time last year, according to WA Police statistics.

"The Liberal government has increased their revenue dramatically but it's clearly not having the road safety benefit," Ms Roberts, the opposition spokeswoman for police and road safety, said today.

"I think the whole area of speed cameras is worthy of some more detailed investigation."

The government doubled the number of speed and traffic light cameras in 2010, nabbing 13 per cent more speeding drivers that year.

At the time, the WA government pledged to commit 100 per cent of speed camera revenue to the Road Trauma Trust Fund, starting this month.....
